What to do in Central African Republic?
The Central African Republic is one of Africa's wildest and least-visited destinations, a land of savannas and dense forests at the geographical heart of the continent. The Dzanga-Sangha reserve is home to one of the world's largest concentrations of great apes and forest elephants. Because of a very difficult security situation, only the south-western region remains accessible to experienced travellers accompanied by guides.
Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve
Dzanga-Sangha is one of the last refuges of Central Africa's dense tropical rainforest, where the borders of Cameroon and Congo meet. Dzanga Bai is an exceptional site where dozens of forest elephants gather every day in a marshy clearing. The reserve also offers habituation experiences with western lowland gorillas and is home to the Baka, a forest hunter-gatherer people.
Highlights : Dzanga Bai — a one-of-a-kind gathering of forest elephants, Trek to habituated western lowland gorillas, Watching bongos and sitatungas in the bais.
Bangui
Bangui is the capital of the Central African Republic, built on the banks of the Ubangi River, which forms the border with the DRC. Despite a tense security context, the city has lively markets, colonial architecture and a spectacular setting along the river. Place de la République and the Mamadou M'Baiki central market offer a glimpse into everyday life in the Central African Republic.
Highlights : Banks of the Ubangi — views of the DRC and traditional canoes, Notre-Dame Cathedral of Bangui — colonial architecture.
Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park
This UNESCO World Heritage national park is one of the largest savanna reserves in Central Africa. It is currently listed as endangered because poaching and armed conflict have devastated its wildlife. Under safe conditions, it would rank among the most remarkable safari destinations in Central Africa.
Highlights : Manovo Plain — former concentrations of wildlife, Bahr Aouk River — crocodiles and hippos, Wooded savannas — landscapes of deep Central Africa.
Travel budget for Central African Republic
The Central African Republic is theoretically a very affordable destination, but real-world costs are high because tourist infrastructure is scarce and guides and escorts are necessary. Dzanga-Sangha is the country's only structured tourism circuit.
- Backpacker : 50–80 €/j — Basic accommodation, local meals and shared transport (Bangui only)
- Comfort : 100–250 €/j — Lodge stay, full board, private 4×4, professional guides and tailored activities
Practical tips for travelling to Central African Republic
- Flight from Paris : 10–16 hours with a stopover (Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Air France via Douala or Nairobi). Connections are rare and irregular.
- Visa : A visa is required before departure. It must be obtained from the CAR embassy in Paris or through a specialist provider. The process is complex.
- Currency : CFA franc (XAF), pegged to the euro (1€ ≈ 655 XAF). Cash is essential — very few ATMs work reliably.
- Language : French is the official language. Sango is the national language spoken by everyone. A local guide is essential.
- Electricity : Types C and E (220V). Power cuts are very frequent. Lodges use generators. A portable battery is essential.
- Health : Mandatory vaccine: yellow fever. Recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, meningitis and rabies. Malaria is endemic — prophylaxis is essential. Bring your own medicines, as supplies are limited.
- Safety : WARNING: armed conflict is ongoing across most of the country. Most Western governments formally advise against travel except to the Dzanga-Sangha region (southwest) with a guide and local security arrangements. Travel only with a specialist agency.
- Planning : You should absolutely travel with an agency specialising in the Central African Republic. Dzanga-Sangha is the only realistic destination. Build a wide safety margin into your itinerary.
