What to do in Ecuador?

Ecuador is a compact showcase of natural wonders: the Galápagos (a sanctuary for unique wildlife), the Andes with their giant volcanoes, pristine Amazon rainforest and the Pacific coast. Quito, a UNESCO-listed colonial capital, is one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America.

Galápagos

The Galápagos Islands are a unique natural laboratory that inspired Darwin. Marine iguanas, giant tortoises, sea lions, equatorial penguins and blue-footed boobies live here with little fear of humans. Diving and snorkelling are among the best in the world.

Highlights : Isla Santa Cruz, Española Island (blue-footed boobies), Fernandina Island (iguanas).

Quito & Historic Center

Quito is the world's highest capital city (2,850 m), with a remarkably well-preserved historic centre that became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Its gilded churches and colonial plazas are striking.

Highlights : Basilica of the National Vow, La Compañía de Jesús, Mitad del Mundo, Teleferico Quito.

Ecuadorian Amazon

Ecuador's rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. From Tena or Coca, eco-lodges make it possible to explore primary forest, meet Kichwa communities and observe extraordinary wildlife.

Highlights : Yasuní National Park, Tena (kayaking), Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve.

Avenue of the Volcanoes

The Avenue of the Volcanoes is a chain of Andean peaks including Cotopaxi (5,897 m) and Chimborazo (6,268 m, the point on Earth closest to the sun). Expect hiking, climbs and spectacular scenery.

Highlights : Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Quilotoa (crater lake), Baños de Agua Santa.

Travel budget for Ecuador

Ecuador uses the US dollar, which makes budgeting easy. Prices are moderate on the mainland, while the Galápagos are much more expensive.
