What to do in Guinea-Bissau?
Guinea-Bissau is one of West Africa's best-kept secrets. The Bijagós Archipelago, a UNESCO biosphere reserve made up of 88 islands inhabited by rare species, is a paradise for lovers of untamed nature. Between pygmy hippos, manatees, sea turtles and animist villages with ancestral rites, this small Portuguese-speaking country promises exceptional discoveries.
Bijagós Archipelago
The Bijagós Archipelago is a UNESCO biosphere reserve made up of 88 islands, only 20 of which are inhabited. This marine sanctuary is home to pygmy hippos, manatees, wild buffalo and dozens of bird species. The Bijagós people, a matriarchal society with strong animist rites, live in near self-sufficiency on their islands.
Highlights : Orango Island — marine hippos, Bubaque Island — the archipelago's hub, Poilão Island — sea turtle nesting grounds.
Bolama
Bolama, the former Portuguese colonial capital, is a magnificent ghost town overtaken by tropical vegetation. Its ruined neoclassical buildings and melancholic atmosphere make it a unique photography spot, far from the usual tourist trail.
Highlights : Ruined colonial governor's palace, Sunset over the estuary.
Bissau
Guinea-Bissau's capital is a laid-back, human-scale and authentic city. Bandim Market, the Museu Nacional, the ruins of Fort São José de Amura and neighbourhoods lined with crumbling colonial houses create an endearing portrait of this little-known capital.
Highlights : Bandim Market — Bissau's lively heart, Fort São José de Amura (18th century), National Museum of Guinea-Bissau.
Travel budget for Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau is one of the cheapest destinations in West Africa. Tourist infrastructure is minimal, especially on the islands, and comfort options are limited. The CFA franc (shared with Senegal) is the currency, which makes exchange easier.
