What to do in Kyrgyzstan?

Kyrgyzstan is one of Central Asia's hidden gems, with its spectacular mountains, crystal-clear high-altitude lakes and preserved nomadic culture. Crossed by the ancient Silk Road, this country offers breathtaking wild landscapes and legendary hospitality. Yurts, horses and endless steppes make up an authentic picture far from mass tourism.

Lake Issyk-Kul

The world's second-largest alpine lake, Issyk-Kul is surrounded by mountains snow-capped year-round despite its 1,600-metre altitude. Its slightly saline blue waters never freeze, hence its Kyrgyz name meaning 'warm lake'. The north shore offers lively beach resorts while the south remains wild and unspoiled.

Highlights : North shore — beaches and renovated Soviet-era resorts, Karakol — base for treks in the Tian Shan, Jeti-Ögüz Canyon — spectacular red rock formations, Przhevalsk — museum dedicated to explorer Przewalski.

Son Kul

Lake Son-Kul is a vast alpine plateau at 3,016 metres altitude, accessible only in summer, by horse or 4x4. Surrounded by rolling steppes, it is the summer home of Kyrgyz nomadic shepherds with their colourful yurts. Sleeping in a yurt by the lake under an exceptional starry sky is an unforgettable experience.

Highlights : Yurt camps — staying with nomadic families, Horseback trek — multi-day tour around the lake, Sunset over the steppes — golden light, Eagle watching — with traditional eagle hunters.

Tash Rabat

Tash Rabat is a 15th-century medieval caravanserai perched at 3,500 metres in an isolated valley, one of the best-preserved historical monuments in Central Asia. This stone building was a Silk Road stopover for merchants and pilgrims crossing the mountains. Its mysterious atmosphere and surrounding landscape make it a unique archaeological site.

Highlights : Caravanserai — interior with 40 vaulted chambers, Tash Rabat Pass — panoramic mountain views, Adjacent yurt camp — traditional stay.

Ala Archa Canyon

Ala Archa National Park is Bishkek residents' natural playground, reachable in under an hour from the capital. This spectacular alpine canyon offers hikes for all levels, from simple forest walks to summit ascents above 4,000 metres. Icy waterfalls and glacier views make it a favourite destination for mountain lovers.

Highlights : Ak-Sai Waterfall — 40-minute walk from the entrance, Ak-Sai Glacier — view of impressive seracs, Uchitel Peak — summit accessible to experienced climbers.

Travel budget for Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of the cheapest destinations in Central Asia. The daily budget is very affordable, especially in yurts where accommodation and meals are often included together.
