What to do in Yemen?
Yemen is a country of exceptional historical and natural richness, cradle of South Arabian civilisation and guardian of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its old cities with mud-brick towers, desert landscapes and the enchanting island of Socotra once made it one of the most fascinating destinations on the Arabian Peninsula. Since 2015, the country has been plunged into a devastating armed conflict that currently makes it inaccessible to travellers.
Old City of Sanaa
The old city of Sanaa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a masterpiece of South Arabian architecture with its mud-brick towers adorned with white stucco friezes. Its centuries-old mosques, covered markets and tower houses with stained-glass windows make it one of the most remarkable urban ensembles in the Islamic world. The ongoing conflict threatens this irreplaceable heritage.
Highlights : Great Mosque of Sanaa — one of the oldest in the Islamic world, Bab al-Yemen — monumental gate of the old city, Souq al-Milh — historic spice market.
Socotra Island
Socotra, nicknamed the "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean", is an island of extraordinary biodiversity, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to the famous Socotra dragon tree, with its otherworldly stocky trunk and umbrella-shaped canopy, as well as hundreds of endemic plant, bird and insect species. Its geographic isolation has made it a unique natural laboratory of evolution.
Highlights : Socotra dragon tree — iconic tree with blood-red sap, Diksam Plateau — spectacular dragon tree forest, Qalansiyah Beach — turquoise lagoon surrounded by dunes, Hoq Caves — impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
Shibam
Shibam is often nicknamed the "Manhattan of the desert" or the "Chicago of the desert" for its mud-brick buildings reaching up to eight storeys, built centuries ago and still inhabited. This 4th-century fortified city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is considered the oldest skyscraper city in the world. It rises in the heart of Wadi Hadramawt, a lush valley cut into the desert plateaus of central Yemen.
Highlights : Mud-brick towers — medieval raw-earth skyscrapers, Wadi Hadramawt — spectacular valley surrounded by cliffs, Sayun town — sultan's palace with immaculate white walls, Tarim — town of 365 mosques and Islamic libraries.
Marib
Marib is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Sheba, a legendary city mentioned in the Bible and the Quran as the kingdom of the Queen of Sheba. Its ancient ruins testify to an advanced South Arabian civilisation that mastered irrigation through the famous Great Dam of Marib, one of the greatest hydraulic works of antiquity. The region remains a major strategic stake in the Yemeni conflict today.
Highlights : Great Dam of Marib — ancient hydraulic masterpiece, Awwam Temple — South Arabian sanctuary known as the "Throne of Bilqis", Almaqah Temple — Sabaean columns still standing, Old Marib — ruins of the historic city.
